The Hartford baseball team began its season with a doubleheader against Trinity College, resulting in two losses. The first game ended with an 8-2 defeat for the Hawks, while the second concluded with a 12-0 shutout by the Bantams.
In the opening game, Trinity took an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. Hartford responded in the third when Alek Popovich hit a double to bring home Ryan Knight for their first run of the season. However, Trinity extended its advantage with a solo home run and consecutive doubles in the bottom half of that inning. The Bantams continued to add runs through timely hitting and capitalized on Hartford’s pitching changes.
Timothy Domizio of Trinity widened the gap further in the fifth inning with a three-run homer, bringing the score to 8-1. Hartford managed one more run late in the ninth after Cameron Boardman delivered a sacrifice fly, but it was not enough as Trinity secured an 8-2 victory.
Pitcher Anthony Bubba started for Hartford and allowed five runs over just over three innings. Jeffery Blake contributed nearly three innings on relief duty but gave up another three runs. Tyler Blumetti and Michael Greco each pitched scoreless innings toward the end of game one.
At bat, Popovich led Hartford by going 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Boardman also drove in a run with his own double and sacrifice fly.
The second game followed a similar pattern as Trinity quickly took control. Back-to-back home runs from Aidan Stern and Tyler Bernstein set an early tone for Trinity. By the end of four innings, they had built a commanding 12-0 lead thanks to consistent hitting that included doubles and triples.
Hartford’s starting pitcher Justin Gouin lasted only two innings after giving up six runs on six hits. Evan Gentile relieved him but struggled as well, allowing another six runs before Joe Dooley came in to pitch two scoreless innings.
Offensively, Nico DiGioa stood out for Hartford by collecting two singles from three at-bats. Knight reached base twice during game two; however, overall offensive production was limited as Hartford managed only three hits across seven innings.
Looking ahead, Hartford will attempt to recover next week although details about their upcoming home games remain uncertain.
