The Hartford baseball team recorded its fifth Conference of New England victory on Apr. 7, defeating Wentworth Institute of Technology by a score of 1-0 in West Hartford.
The close game saw strong pitching performances from both teams, with the Hawks ultimately claiming their fourth consecutive win. The match remained scoreless through the first five innings as Hartford’s sophomore Justin Gouin allowed only four hits while keeping the Leopards off the board. Wentworth’s Alec Peruzzi also kept Hartford from scoring during this stretch.
Sophomore Michael Greco entered in relief for Hartford in the sixth inning and allowed just one base runner across three innings. The decisive moment came in the bottom of the eighth when senior Cameron Boardman singled home sophomore Nico DiGioia, who had reached base on a wild pitch.
Senior Michael Featherstone closed out the game for Hartford with a perfect ninth inning to secure his third save of the season. At bat, senior Patrick Joseph was notable for going two-for-two, while DiGioia hit a double in the first inning—the only extra-base hit of the game—and Boardman collected what proved to be the lone run batted in.
Reflecting on back-to-back wins, Featherstone said, “Yesterday we had a big win at Stevens and I really think the weekend was big for us. We kind of flipped the script and coming into today, guys were a little beat up after the long day yesterday so it felt great to help the staff close things out today. It was a good win and I hope we can keep this rolling.”
Looking ahead, Hartford will continue its home stand on Saturday with a doubleheader against Suffolk University starting at noon.
