The Hartford Women’s Lacrosse team defeated Wellesley College by a score of 17-3 in an away game, according to a March 10 announcement from the team.
The win is significant for Hartford as it marks their first victory of the season after three losses and is also the first under new head coach Jen Fallon. The result provides momentum for the Hawks as they prepare for their next matchup against Keene State College.
Hartford started strong, taking an early 8-0 lead in the first period with seven different players contributing to the scoring. Junior Katie Graham opened the scoring just over a minute into play, while junior Talei Ricketson was the only player to score twice in that period. In the second quarter, sophomore Kate Zonin led both offensively and defensively, scoring two goals and collecting a ground ball. By halftime, Hartford led 12-1.
After halftime, Hartford continued its dominance by adding five more goals in the third period and holding Wellesley scoreless during that frame. In total, Zonin finished with four goals to bring her season tally to seven. Costa, Samela, Slattery, Graham, and Ricketson each scored twice. On defense, Brenna Slattery collected three ground balls and caused a turnover. Junior Mandi Rivard earned her first win of the season as goalkeeper for Hartford, while Emily Campbell made nine saves in relief.
Wellesley managed three goals from three different players but was outshot by Hartford 30 to 16 overall. Milica Simic led The Blue with five shots on goal.
Reflecting on the win, Lauren Samela said: “The win today was just what we needed. The first three losses were a tough way to start the season but now we need to keep the momentum into our game against Keene!”
Hartford will travel next to Keene State College for a game scheduled on March 12 at 4:00 p.m.
