Rep. John Larson, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Connecticut’s 1st district since 1999, has expressed his concerns regarding a proposed tax plan by House Republicans through a series of tweets on July 2, 2025. His comments focus on the potential impacts of the bill on various social programs in Connecticut.
In his first tweet at 15:24 UTC, Larson criticized the House Republicans’ proposal to pass tax breaks for billionaires funded by cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. He highlighted the potential impact on Connecticut residents, stating that “186,580 residents lose health care,” “34,000+ lose food assistance,” and “Pell Grants cut for 43,735 students.” Larson urged for the defeat of what he termed as the “Big, Ugly Bill.”
Later that day at 18:26 UTC, Larson tweeted about how “The GOP tax plan puts the nutrition benefits our veterans rely on to put food at the table at risk – including 9,000 right here in Connecticut.” He emphasized that only four Republican votes were needed to join Democrats in defeating this legislation.
At 20:32 UTC, Larson addressed concerns about children’s nutrition programs. He stated that “More than 37,000 kids in Connecticut rely on the Summer Meals Program.” He warned that these programs could be jeopardized by cuts to SNAP benefits under the proposed bill and mentioned his collaboration with other members of the Connecticut delegation to oppose these cuts.
John B. Larson was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1948 and currently resides in East Hartford. He graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a BA in 1971 and served previously in the Connecticut Senate from 1987 to 1995 before joining Congress.
