John B. Larson, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Connecticut’s 1st district, has been vocal on social media about proposed cuts to essential welfare programs and tax policy changes. Through his tweets, he highlights concerns regarding the impact of these policies on vulnerable populations in Connecticut and across the United States.
On July 7, 2025, Larson expressed concern over potential reductions in SNAP benefits for at least 34,000 residents in Connecticut. He stated that “we should be supporting our seniors, children, and veterans who rely on SNAP, not cutting their benefits to give the wealthy a tax break!”
The following day, July 8, 2025, Larson reaffirmed his commitment to opposing these cuts. He tweeted that “we will fight these cuts every step of the way and work together to protect Medicaid, SNAP, and Social Security for the millions who depend on these programs.” He emphasized the importance of speaking out against what he described as “devastating cuts.”
Later that day, Larson criticized President Trump’s economic policies in another tweet. He argued that while “the ultra-wealthy get a new tax break,” additional tariffs proposed by President Trump would raise costs for American families by $2,300 annually. Larson called this development “outrageous” and advocated for measures to lower household costs instead.
Larson has been serving in Congress since replacing Barbara Kennelly in 1999. Prior to his congressional career, he served in the Connecticut Senate from 1987 to 1995. Born in Hartford in 1948 and currently residing in East Hartford at age 74, Larson is an alumnus of Central Connecticut State University.
