Rep. John Larson, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Connecticut’s 1st district since 1999, shared his views on several pressing issues through a series of tweets. Larson, who replaced Barbara Kennelly in 1999 and previously served in the Connecticut Senate from 1987 to 1995, has been vocal about economic policies affecting American families.
On May 14, 2025, Larson criticized President Trump’s tariffs, stating that they would “cost the average family thousands of dollars a year at the grocery store, pharmacy, and everywhere you shop.” He mentioned that Democrats on the Ways and Means Committee had proposed an amendment to end these tariffs but claimed that every Republican voted against it.
In another tweet on May 14, Larson highlighted the impact of enhancements made to the Affordable Care Act by sharing an example from West Hartford: “Rod in West Hartford saw his family’s premiums go from $1,300 to $20/month.” He warned that Republican plans could result in over 13 million Americans losing their coverage.
Larson further emphasized economic disparities by contrasting the financial decisions faced by billionaires with those of working parents. On May 14, he advocated for passing an expanded Child Tax Credit proposed by Representatives Rosa DeLauro and Suzan DelBene. According to him, “Let’s pass @rosadelauro and @RepDelBene’s expanded Child Tax Credit – and cut child poverty in half – not cut taxes for the wealthy!”
Born in Hartford in 1948 and now residing in East Hartford, Larson graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a BA degree in 1971.
