John B. Larson, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Connecticut’s 1st district since 1999, has recently voiced his concerns on social media regarding the Republican tax plan and its potential impact on various social programs.
On July 2, Larson expressed his alarm over a new report indicating that the GOP tax plan threatens not only Medicaid and SNAP but also “puts your EARNED BENEFITS at risk.” He warned that the bill could jeopardize Social Security’s solvency, potentially leading to a “20% benefit cut.” He urged Republicans to vote against the proposal and collaborate with Democrats to enhance Social Security rather than diminish it. The following day, on July 3, Larson reiterated his opposition to the Republican bill, highlighting its potential consequences for health care and food assistance programs affecting millions of Americans. He advocated for an alternative approach led by Democrats, which aims to bolster Social Security by ensuring “the wealthy pay their fair share,” under the leadership of Rep. Jeffries. Later on July 3, Larson criticized the GOP tax plan for its provision that could remove health care coverage from 17 million Americans and initiate significant cuts to Medicare. He accused Republicans of hastily advancing this legislation to facilitate additional tax breaks for billionaires and called for a collective effort to reject these proposed cuts. His statement can be found here.
Larson was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1948 and resides in East Hartford. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Connecticut State University in 1971. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in the Connecticut Senate from 1987 to 1995.
