The Hartford women’s lacrosse team defeated Keene State College by a score of 13-7, according to a March 12 announcement. Sophomore Kate Zonin led the Hawks with a career-high eight goals in the game.
The win brings Hartford’s record to 2-3 for the season. The match began with senior Sara Costa scoring early, but Keene State responded and held a one-goal lead at the end of the first quarter. Zonin then scored three consecutive goals in the second quarter, helping Hartford regain and maintain their advantage going into halftime.
Junior Mandi Rivard made key saves during the second quarter, while junior Laurel McIntosh added to Hartford’s lead after halftime. Although Keene State narrowed the gap, Zonin continued her strong performance, scoring additional goals that helped secure the victory for Hartford.
“It felt great to get out there and put some goals in the back of the net,” said sophomore Kate Zonin. “That said, a lot of the credit goes to my teammates. If our defense isn’t making stops and we’re not winning the draw, I don’t even get the opportunity to create those scoring chances. It was truly a full team effort. Looking ahead to next week’s games, we’re focused on bringing the same energy and determination to come out strong against Wentworth and SUNY Plattsburgh. We’re excited for the challenge and ready to keep building on this momentum.”
Zonin finished with eight goals and five draw controls. McIntosh contributed two goals and an assist, while Costa added two more scores for Hartford. Junior Lauren Samela led defensively with four caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Hartford will play its home opener against Wentworth Institute of Technology on March 17.
