John B. Larson, a U.S. Congressman representing Connecticut’s 1st district since 1999, has recently taken to social media to address concerns regarding federal funding for public broadcasting and to express his appreciation for mothers across the nation.
On May 9, 2025, Larson tweeted about potential impacts on local PBS and NPR stations if federal funding is withdrawn. He stated, “Without federal funding, local PBS and NPR stations could be shuttered, and kids programming could grind to a halt.” He further mentioned writing to President Biden condemning an order he deems illegal that aims to defund these entities. Larson reaffirmed his commitment to supporting public broadcasting.
In another post dated May 11, 2025, Larson extended greetings on Mother’s Day with the message: “Happy Mother’s Day to moms, grandmothers, aunts, and all mother figures in Connecticut and across the country. We appreciate you more than you know!”
Continuing his advocacy for children’s programming on May 12, 2025, Larson addressed President Trump’s proposal to defund PBS. He expressed concern over the cancellation of federal grants that supported popular shows like Sesame Street. His tweet read: “Millions of our children grew up on PBS Kids. President Trump wants to defund PBS & he canceled the federal grant that brought us Sesame Street, Clifford, and Reading Rainbow. Our kids deserve better.”
Congressman John B. Larson has been serving in Congress since replacing Barbara Kennelly in 1999 after previously serving in the Connecticut Senate from 1987 to 1995.
