Rep. John Larson, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress representing Connecticut’s 1st district since 1999, recently addressed concerns about fiscal policies and their impact on social welfare through a series of tweets. Larson, who succeeded Barbara Kennelly in Congress and previously served in the Connecticut Senate, is known for his focus on economic fairness and social programs.
On May 13, 2025, Rep. Larson expressed his concern regarding the contributions of billionaires like Elon Musk to Social Security. In his tweet, he highlighted that “Billionaires like Elon Musk pay little to nothing into Social Security each year.” He criticized Republican proposals that could add over $4 trillion to the national debt while providing tax cuts for the wealthy. Larson suggested enhancing Social Security by ensuring that wealthy individuals contribute more equitably.
In a subsequent tweet posted on May 14, 2025, Larson commented on Republican plans to reduce taxes for affluent individuals by cutting essential services such as SNAP and healthcare access. He shared feedback from constituents who would face challenges in accessing healthcare and securing food if these cuts were implemented. The congressman questioned whether “MAGA stands for ‘Make America Greedy Again?'”
Later that day, Rep. Larson tweeted about the need for fair treatment of workers and citizens alike. He referenced union workers at @IAM_Union in East Hartford and Middletown seeking equitable contracts from their employers as an analogy for Americans deserving fair government deals. Criticizing Republican efforts to finance tax reductions for the rich by cutting Medicaid and SNAP benefits, he remarked that “That’s a bad deal for the people!”
John B. Larson was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1948 and currently resides in East Hartford. A graduate of Central Connecticut State University with a BA earned in 1971, he has been a steadfast advocate for economic justice throughout his legislative career.
