Rep. John Larson, who represents Connecticut’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, marked the anniversary of his colleague John Lewis’s passing and addressed recent legislative and administrative actions in a series of posts on July 17 and 18, 2025.
On July 17, Larson reflected on the legacy of Rep. John Lewis, stating, “It has been 5 years since my friend and @WaysMeansCmte seat mate, Rep. John Lewis, passed away. I was proud to work with him to pass the Affordable Care Act & hold a House sit-in to demand action on gun violence. Let’s all honor his memory by getting into some more #GoodTrouble.”
Later that day, he commented on mental health services for youth: “We worked with both the Trump and Biden Administrations to launch the #988lifeline and new mental health services for our youth. It is shameful to see this administration back away from that commitment and end the LGBTQ+ youth suicide hotline. It must be restored!” This post followed bipartisan efforts to establish crisis support resources for young people.
In another post early on July 18, Larson criticized Republican-backed budget cuts: “The cuts Republicans passed tonight will rip away access to family planning from 48 million women and eviscerate aid for 40 million kids in schools worldwide. Rubberstamping dangerous ‘DOGE’ cuts to justify tax breaks for billionaires is beyond unconscionable. I voted NO.”
Larson has served in Congress since replacing Barbara Kennelly in 1999 after earlier serving in the Connecticut Senate from 1987 to 1995. Born in Hartford in 1948, he currently resides in East Hartford and holds a BA from Central Connecticut State University.
