The group will read and discuss Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain this month. The novel follows the adventures of two white boys & an escaped black slave as they sail along the Mississippi River. Shortly after its publication in 1884 the public commissioners in Concord, MA described the book as racist, coarse, trashy, & inaccurate. This was the first time the novel was recommended to be banned and it wouldn’t be the last time. Twain commented that this would only increase sales. And, indeed, the book became a best seller.
Leading the discussion will be veteran discussion leader Beth Morrill. Copies of the book will be available at the library and online. engagedpatrons.org/EventsRegister.cfm?SiteID=3362&BranchID=1000002724&Branch=Granby%20Public%20Library&EventID=466170&PK= recommended, but not required.
