Town of Glastonbury Celebrates Grand Reopening of the Welles-Turner Memorial Library (WTML)

Ribbon-Cutting and Open House Community Event – September 17

Post Date: 08/02/2022 9:40 AM

On Saturday, September 17,  the Town of Glastonbury invites the community to gather at the  Welles-Turner Memorial Library (WTML) for its Grand Reopening  Celebration. An official Ribbon-cutting Ceremony will begin at 10 a.m.,  followed by an Open House featuring activities for community members of  all ages. These events are free and open for all to enjoy at 2407 Main  Street in Glastonbury.

“Over the years, I’ve had  the opportunity to participate in a number of renovations and additions  to the Library, which were made possible through the ongoing  collaboration with the Second Century Fund, the Friends of the Library,  and other valued community partners. I’m pleased to be a part of this  latest effort to further improve the library, which provides modernized  technology solutions, versatile workspaces, and a host of other  resources to support current and future learning experiences,” said  Glastonbury Town Manager, Richard J. Johnson.

In November 2018,  Glastonbury voters approved the $6.5 million library renovation and  expansion project, which added approximately 3,700 square feet of new  space for the library.  Project design components included an expansion  to the Teen and Children’s areas, a dedicated makerspace, and  renovations to the existing library.  TSKP STUDIO, located in Hartford,  provided architectural services for the project. The contract work was  done by Orlando Annulli & Sons.

The Second Century Fund  contributed $1 million towards the WTML expansion/renovation and the  Friends of WTML provided $100,000 to the project.  Additionally, the  Town of Glastonbury was awarded a $1 million library construction grant  from the Connecticut State Library to support this project.

“We’re grateful to the  library organizations and town leadership that made this dream a  reality,” said Library Director Barbara Bailey. “The new space has  opened a world of opportunity for our residents. The renovations help to  connect people to knowledge and resources in a way that wasn’t possible  before.”

The official  Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony will include remarks from town and regional  dignitaries, library leadership, and partners. The Open House will run  until 4:30 pm and include live musical performances, crafts, character  appearances, storytelling, a magician show, and tours of the new space.
