The book club will read & discuss Blindsight, a hard science fiction novel (emphasizes scientific accuracy & precise technical detail) written by Peter Watts & published in 2006. It was nominated for several awards including the Hugo Award for Best Novel. The story begins with Earth being covered by a shower of shooting stars from which objects fall & burn across the skies. Analysis determines the objects were making some sort of survey & are generating a powerful radio signal to the outer reaches of the solar system. Earth prepares for alien contact but years go by & nothing happens. And then a strange object is found. A ship is built loaded with cutting-edge technology & manned with a highly trained & specialized crew. Their mission is to study the object & make contact.
Books will be available at the library or online. Discussion lead by John Rusnock.
