East Hartford, CT – On July 5, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) and Mayor Mike Walsh announced $530,000 in new federal funding for the East Hartford Fire Department to improve firefighter training and safety.
“I am thrilled to support the East Hartford Fire Department with new federal funding for firefighter training opportunities and critical equipment upgrades,” said Larson. “This new funding builds on Mayor Walsh and Chief Munson’s efforts over the last two years to improve on-the-job safety and utilize state of the art firefighting equipment to best serve the community.”
“This grant is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the East Hartford Fire Department and will allow our firefighters to continue to provide the excellent service they are known for and that our residents deserve,” said Walsh. “Thank you to Congressman Larson for his continued support of our community.”
“The members and officers of East Hartford Fire Department are thankful for the continued support of our local leaders in the Mayor’s office and Town Council, our state delegation in Hartford, and our federal delegation in Washington,” said East Hartford Fire Chief Kevin Munson. “Without these much-needed funds, the EHFD would have to make difficult choices on how to allocate precious financial resources. Protecting the community, and our firefighters, is one of our core values and this award allows us to continue that proud tradition with advanced technology and human capital development. Mayor Walsh challenged his Directors to think big and think differently, this grant award is an example of thinking big and doing things differently for East Hartford.”
East Hartford Fire Department was awarded funding through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program to support new firefighter training, turnout gear, and thermal image cameras. Rep. Larson helped secure this funding as part of the Fiscal Year 2022 government funding package, committing $324 million directly to up to 2,000 fire departments across the nation to improve services and enhance firefighter safety.
Last year, East Hartford was awarded $875,000 through the AFG program for new breathing support and CPR compression devices, in addition to a total of $45.5 million in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan, legislation Rep. Larson helped author and pass to support COVID-19 recovery, economic development, and to help students catch up from lost instruction time during the pandemic.
