Washington, D.C. - On April 20, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) voted against Republican legislation (H.R. 734) to ban all transgender girls and transgender women from participating on school sports teams.
“As a former school athlete and coach, I know just how transformative school sports can be for our nation’s youth, and this legislation is wrongheaded and harmful,” said Larson. “Congress does not need to legislate on this issue, and in fact, it is more important now than ever that Congress stand up and ensure our children go to school in a supportive and safe environment. I voted against this Republican attack on trans youth because it is their way of bringing culture wars into our schools to pander to their extreme base. Instead of creating jobs, lowering costs to families, and ending gun violence- initiatives Americans want- House Republicans have chosen to ostracize a small population of children and young adults.
“Most shockingly, this bill is written so vaguely, it could force girls to undergo invasive medical exams to ‘prove’ they are a girl- something Republicans in some state legislatures have already proposed. This bill is dangerous, shameful, and discriminatory, and it has no place in our nation’s schools,” Larson concluded.
