East Hartford, CT – On May 19, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after Speaker McCarthy ‘pressed pause’ on bipartisan budget negotiations:

“The country cannot go on ‘pause’ because Speaker McCarthy has no control over his Conference," said Larson. "We witnessed the 15 rounds of voting it took for him to secure the gavel, only after making concessions to his most extreme right-wing members behind closed doors. Their demands are not worth the first-ever default on the national debt, which would prevent 66 million Americans from receiving their Social Security checks, disrupt Medicare coverage, and put veterans’ and military compensation in jeopardy.

"The American people will not stand by as House Republicans play politics with people’s lives to get the devastating cuts they are demanding to programs like Social Security, Medicaid and SNAP nutrition benefits. If Speaker McCarthy is unwilling to continue negotiations, the time has come for President Biden to utilize the 14th Amendment and protect the American people from a catastrophic default,” Larson concluded.
