Washington, D.C. - On May 17, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement for Police Week.

“We honor the brave law enforcement and first responders of Connecticut’s First District and our country who put their lives on the line every day,” said Larson. “Last October, our community lost two Bristol police officers, Sgt. Dustin Demonte and Officer Alex Hamzy, in a tragic act of gun violence. My thoughts are with their family and friends this week, and their devastating loss serves as a reminder of the dangers law enforcement face in the line of duty each and every day. I am committed to working with my colleagues in Washington to ensure first responders and law enforcement have the resources they need to protect our community safely.

“This week, my Republican colleagues put forward misguided, overly broad legislation that would do nothing to protect public safety officers and villainizes immigrants instead. Just last month, they passed legislation that would cut funding for law enforcement, including the FBI and the ATF, resulting in  thousands of layoffs of first responders across the country. If my colleagues are serious about protecting the lives of law enforcement, they will work with us to craft common-sense proposals that provide the resources officers need and address the gun violence epidemic in our country,” Larson concluded.
