Washington, D.C. - On May 25, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after the House of Representatives left for a district work period before addressing the debt limit. If Congress does not lift the debt limit prior to the expected default date of June 1st, there would be unprecedented economic and human consequences.

“Republicans have gone home saying we ought to take their proposal that would put 313,000 people in Connecticut at risk of losing their health coverage, 95,000 people at risk of losing their nutrition assistance, and 80,000 would see their Pell Grants reduced or eliminated, making cruel cuts to some of our nation’s most important programs," said Larson. "As we celebrate Memorial Day, if we followed Republicans’ plan and were to default, they have prioritized paying China before our nation’s veterans. Is it any wonder why China is looking on and rooting for America to default but be the first ones to be paid. I am calling for my Republican colleagues to stop their crusade for cuts and instead ensure our nation pays its bills!”
