Washington, D.C. - On June 7, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) joined Rep. Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) to introduce the American Family Act, which would make the monthly Child Tax Credit permanent. In 2021, the expanded Child Tax Credit Democrats passed as part of the American Rescue Plan COVID relief package created the largest drop in child poverty in a single year.
“The expansion of the Child Tax Credit is one of the most consequential policies I've ever voted for,” said Larson. “Next to Social Security, the CTC is the number one anti-poverty program for children and ensures families can afford their basic necessities. I commend Rosa DeLauro’s tireless efforts for this life-changing provision and her years of dedication to make it permanent. I am proud to join her today in reintroducing this legislation, and I will keep fighting beside her to make the CTC permanent, so we can help working families get ahead by providing financial security in the face of rising costs.”
The American Family Act would:
- Permanently reinstate the expanded and improved, monthly Child Tax Credit,
- Provide the full CTC to “left behind” children by making the credit fully refundable,
- Continue the Young Child Tax Credit (YCTC) of $300 per month ($3,600 per year up from $2,000 per year) for children under 6 years of age,
- Expand the maximum CTC to $250 per month ($3,000 per year up from $2,000 per year) for kids ages 6 to 17,
- Provide for monthly payments so families have access to the Tax Credit as bills arrive,
- Extend the expanded and improved CTC to the United States Territories.
