East Hartford, CT – On June 30, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released this statement following the Supreme Court overruling President Biden’s student debt forgiveness plan of $10,000 in student debt relief for borrowers making under $125,000 and an additional $10,000 for Pell Grant recipients.

“When President Biden announced his student debt forgiveness plan last year, millions of low- and middle-income borrowers let out a sigh of relief. But today, this activist Supreme Court has taken that away,” said Larson. “I have heard from constituents who cannot afford to buy homes, start families, or buy their basic necessities because of crushing student loan debt, and that is why I have supported the President’s student loan forgiveness plan and called on him to take this action.

“I am deeply disappointed in today’s decision from the Court and will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress and the President to not only forgive a portion of student debt, but to ensure every American can access the education they need without taking on mountains of loans. We will continue to pursue a common-sense approach of service to your country for loan forgiveness. For every year you serve your country, we can offer two years of in-state tuition or loan forgiveness by passing my ACTION for National Service Act,” Larson concluded.

In addition to supporting student loan forgiveness, Rep. Larson introduced ACTION for National Service to ensure young people who serve two full terms of service are rewarded with an educational benefit equal to four years of average in-state tuition.
